THE MEDICAL OFFICE A GREAT PLACE TO BELONG

THE MEDICAL OFFICE A GREAT PLACE TO BELONG

Medical secretaries work alongside doctors and allied health professionals to manage the administrative side of healthcare. Their work helps direct care providers deliver the best patient services possible. As the public face of their employers, medical secretaries are called on to be efficient and display patience, and compassion, even under pressure.

On any given day, a Medical Secretary might accomplish the following:

  • Manage patient insurance forms, health information and electronic medical records
  • Handle ICD-10 medical coding plus patient and insurance billing
  • Answer phones, greet patients and scheduling appointments
  • Analyze information and prepare reports
  • Check in patients
  • Collect co-pays
  • Communicate with patients’ insurance companies, pharmacies, and more

Medical secretaries work under many names. Their job titles are set by their employer rather than an industry-wide standard and include:

  • Medical Office Secretary
  • Medical Administrative Assistant
  • Medical Office Assistant
  • Medical Receptionist
  • Medical Billing Clerk
  • Medical Biller
  • Billing Coordinator
  • Patient Coordinator
  • Physician Office Specialist
  • Unit Secretary
  • Unit Support Representative
  • Ward Clerk
  • Claims Processor
  • Admissions Coordinator

As a Medical Secretary, you’ll be needed anywhere healthcare is provided. Just a few of these environments include the offices of physicians, and medical specialists, hospital admissions and patient care units, blood banks, diagnostic imaging facilities, nursing homes, research facilities, and more.

Ample growth is expected in this career, making work as a Medical Secretary a great path for a brighter future. And while there is no universally required formal training, most healthcare employers prefer to hire candidates who have prepared by completing post-secondary medical secretary education.
